The Brae Postbox, Kincraig, Mug by Ann Vastano

Scarlet against a tapestry of mellow rusts and sage greens, the cast‑iron postbox stands proudly on the Brae like a soldier in immaculate uniform. Long grasses dance around its plinth, blades rendered in lemon, jade and turquoise, while periwinkle shadows suggest the passing of high clouds. Behind, a strip of grey tarmac winds towards distant birch woods, punctuated by telegraph poles whose cross‑bars resemble tiny weather vanes. Purple hills anchor the backdrop, their flanks softened by summer haze, and above them two crows drift lazily, black arrows cutting through an eggshell sky. Thick, vertical brush marks on the postbox emphasise its solidity; finer, dashing strokes in the meadow capture wind chasing through seed‑heads. You could almost slip a postcard under the glossy aperture and hear it thunk inside, knowing a kindly postie will rattle over the cattle grid tomorrow morning. It’s a celebration of everyday infrastructure given star billing by Scotland’s untameable colour.
