Autumn, Ryvoan Bothy, Mug by Ann Vastano

Ryvoan’s shoulder of hill explodes in a patchwork rug of ochre, tangerine and magenta, as autumn heather and birch shout their last hurrah before frost. A narrow track threads the slope, painted lemon where sunlight strikes and dusky plum where shadows of leaning pines spill downslope. Higher up, firs perch on the ridge in silhouette, their shapes smoked into a twilight gradient of prussian blue that melts into a violet sky. A shaft of late sunlight slices through a break in cloud, bleaching one distant summit in buttermilk glare and setting a diagonal of glowing lime that guides your gaze along the glen. Brushstrokes tumble and overlap—wet‑on‑wet puddles for sky, dry scumbles for hillside grasses, scratchy marks for tree trunks—capturing both energy and inevitable stillness. The painting smells of peat bog and damp wool and sounds like boots skidding on loose gravel. One glance and you’ll want to shoulder a rucksack, chase that sunbeam and brew tea at the bothy door while the valley shifts through a dozen more colours.
