How to Tell if a Giclée Print is High Quality
Not all giclée prints are created equal. Some are proper museum-grade pieces that’ll look stunning for half a century; others… well, let’s just say they might be stretching the term “giclée” to sell you a fancy poster. Here’s how to tell if you’re looking at the real deal.
Look at the inks
True giclée prints use pigment-based inks, not dye-based. Pigment inks are made of tiny coloured particles that sit on the paper’s surface, resisting light and water far better than dyes. That’s why they can last 50 to 100 years without significant fading.
Check the paper or canvas
A genuine giclée should be printed on acid-free, archival-quality paper or canvas. It’ll usually be thicker and have a slight texture, designed to hold pigment properly. If it feels flimsy or looks like standard glossy photo paper, that’s a red flag.
Resolution matters
High-quality giclées start with high-resolution digital files — we’re talking at least 300 DPI. This ensures fine lines, soft gradients and brushstrokes come through beautifully. Blurry edges or pixelation? That’s a no.
Ask about the printer
Serious giclées are produced on specialised large-format inkjet printers (often 8 or 12 colour). If a shop can’t tell you what they use, or they’re printing on a basic desktop model, it’s worth being cautious.
Edition & provenance
If you’re buying from an artist or gallery, they’ll often offer signed, limited editions with a certificate of authenticity. While not always necessary for a quality print, it does give extra peace of mind.
