Funny vs Sentimental: Which Cards Sell Better?
If you could ask a card rack, it’d give you the answer straight away — folk can’t resist a laugh. Humour cards often outpace their sentimental cousins, simply because they’re safer ground. A well-timed joke is easier than risking a mushy message that might land awkwardly. But that doesn’t mean soppy cards are out of fashion. Far from it.
Why funny often wins
A funny card breaks the ice. It’s the easy option when you’re not sure what to say, or when the occasion itself is a bit awkward (40th birthdays come to mind). In Scotland, especially, humour’s practically currency. A cheeky quip or playful Scots phrase makes people feel right at home — no need for heartfelt declarations that might earn a raised eyebrow.
Where sentiment still shines
That said, there are moments when only something genuine will do. Big anniversaries, sympathy cards, new babies — these tend to steer folk towards words that mean more than a giggle. A thoughtful card can say “I care, and you deserve to know it.” No emoji-laden message can quite do the same.
A balance that keeps tills ringing
Truth is, the best-selling shops — ours included — keep a good stock of both. Because people aren’t all one thing. They’ll pick a laugh for their mate’s birthday, then come back for a tender card when life takes a turn.
